US President Donald Trump said he believes Israel will withdraw from southern Lebanon, stressing that he has held talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the issue.
During a meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, Trump was asked if he thought Israel would withdraw from Lebanese territory, as it has expanded its presence in the north and deeper into southern Lebanon during the conflict with Iran.
"I spoke to Bibi (Benjamin Netanyahu) about it, I think they'll do it, I think they want to do it. They're doing well with Lebanon. Marco Rubio talked about it," Trump said.
Following Trump's statement, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also spoke about the possibility of an agreement between Israel and Lebanon. The US president added that "I think it will go very well."
However, despite the optimism expressed by American officials, the situation on the ground remains tense. Fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon has been one of the main fronts in the regional conflict linked to Iran.
Tehran has declared that the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory is a non-negotiable condition for any permanent peace agreement. Israel, meanwhile, has continued military operations against Hezbollah, and Israeli government officials have reiterated that they aim to create a buffer zone in southern Lebanon to guarantee the security of the country's northern areas.
