The visit of the Iraqi Kurdistan delegation to Tirana, on the eve of the NATO Summit in Ankara, raises questions about the political messages that Edi Rama is sending and the consequences that this move may have on relations with Turkey...
A completely unusual and still unclear visit took place yesterday at the Albanian government headquarters, where a delegation from Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Autonomous Region in Iraq, was received by Edi Rama and a considerable number of ministers from his cabinet.
A visit that the Albanian Prime Minister presented, as is his custom, with a theatrical scenography, where all the guests wore white sneakers.
But its importance is expected to be better understood today.
On the day when Edi Rama participates in the NATO Summit in Ankara.
In this context, the reception of the Kurdish delegation can also be read as a silent provocation towards his former friend, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
A leader who, according to many analyses, has not hidden his dissatisfaction with recent political developments in Albania.
The reception of Qubad Talabani, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, initially by Edi Rama and then by two of the most important cabinet ministers, constitutes a development that raises more questions than answers.
The Albanian government has not yet clarified what this partnership specifically represents and what its strategic objectives are.
The Iraqi Kurdistan region encompasses one of the most important energy areas in the Middle East, home to large reserves of oil and natural gas.
The Iraqi Kurds are close allies of the West, particularly the United States and Israel.
However, Kurdistan's leaders have also maintained good relations with Turkey, to avoid tensions with Ankara, which continues to consider the Kurdish issue a sensitive national security problem.
The most important investors in Kurdistan are precisely Turkish companies.
In fact, just before arriving in Tirana, Qubad Talabani held a meeting in Ankara with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
However, it is still not clear what Albania aims for with this partnership, which seems to be building discreetly but at a rapid pace.
Qubad Talabani is the son of former Iraqi President and historic Kurdish leader, Jalal Talabani.
He is considered a politician with good relations with both Israel and Greece.
Years ago, Turkish and Arab political circles accused Kurdish leaders of aiming to create a "Greater Israel" in the region.
A thesis that never materialized.
However, relations between Kurdistan and Israel have remained close, especially in the fields of security and technology.
On his official website, Talabani announced that the visit to Albania aims to strengthen cooperation in the digitalization of public services, taking the Albanian experience as a model, as well as expanding investments in the tourism sector.
He also announced the opening of a direct air route between Sulaymaniyah and Tirana, to encourage tourist and business travel.
Sulaymaniyah is one of the most important economic centers in the Middle East, where some of the largest international oil and gas companies operate, with considerable influence on the politics and geopolitics of the region.
Precisely for this reason, the "meeting of the white sneakers" is expected to receive greater resonance in Turkey's political and media circles.
It is not excluded that this move will be interpreted in Ankara as a political signal from Edi Rama.
Even as a response to the positions that, according to many observers, Turkey has recently taken towards political developments in Albania.
So far, media outlets close to President Erdoğan have not reacted.
Equally unclear is the question of who conceived this new partnership with the Kurdistan Region.
Because it is about a relationship that could have geopolitical consequences and that, in any functional democracy, should be the subject of institutional and parliamentary discussion.
Not the result of a single person's decision-making.
Because strategic alliances are not personal matters.
They are state decisions that can directly affect Albania's international position./ Pamphlet
Ky eshte njeri i poshter. Ky vetem pyka do ti vendos Shqiperise dhe shqiptarve. Dhe kete po e bene "softly", qe shqiptaret trutredhur te mos e kuptojnë.
Neser avazi,neser.
Ç'i plasi Ramës!
