Trump has arrived in Ankara to attend the NATO summit, where he was welcomed with an official ceremony by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. After the reception, the two leaders held a bilateral meeting, where Trump commented on relations with European allies, the relationship with Giorgia Meloni, the war in Ukraine, the US military presence in Europe and other international security issues.
United States President Donald Trump spoke from the NATO summit taking place in Ankara, where during a bilateral meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, he commented on Washington's relations with European allies and praised cooperation with Turkey.
Trump described Turkey as one of the US's most reliable partners, while criticizing Italy, France and Germany for their stance towards Washington.
"Turkey is more loyal than many other countries. Italy, France and Germany have turned their backs on us," the US president declared at the start of talks with Erdogan.
He also spoke about his relationship with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Trump has described her as "a good person," despite the criticism he recently addressed to him on the social network Truth Social, where he ironically implied that he needed a restraining order against her.
Trump spoke during a statement alongside Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara, where this year's NATO summit is being held.
"I think she's a good person. Actually, we had a good week. We had a good relationship. It got a little sour because she refused to help us again," Trump said.
The American president added that, in his opinion, Meloni made a mistake with the decision not to include Italy in supporting operations against Iran.
"I think she's a good person, actually. But I think she made a mistake," Trump declared.
He also stressed that he had not exerted great pressure on the Italian prime minister on this issue, but admitted that her decision affected their relations.
"I didn't put a lot of pressure on her. When she refused to let Italy get involved, it soured my relationship with her a little bit," the American president said.
United States President Donald Trump also spoke about the war in Ukraine, relations with Europe, and the American military presence on the continent, during his bilateral meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara, where the NATO summit is taking place.
Commenting on the war in Ukraine, Trump said he believes both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin are willing to reach an agreement to end the conflict.
"I think both Zelensky and Putin want to make a deal. It's unfortunate that it's taking so long. I had a very positive and long conversation with Russian President Putin and one with Zelensky afterwards. I think we'll resolve the war, hopefully soon," Trump declared.
The US president is also expected to hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the NATO summit.
Trump has made ending the war in Ukraine one of the key promises of his second presidential term and has repeatedly stated that a peace deal is achievable.
During his statement, Trump also spoke about the future of the US military presence in Europe, leaving open the possibility of a withdrawal.
"We can withdraw all our troops from Europe," the US president said.
He also issued a warning to European countries regarding immigration and energy policies, arguing that these are the biggest challenges facing the continent.
"As you may have noticed, Europe is a very different place than it was twenty years ago, very different, and they would do well to pay attention to immigration and energy. If they don't pay attention to those two things, we won't have a Europe anymore ," Trump declared.
The US president's statements come at a time when the NATO summit is taking place amid discussions about the war in Ukraine, European security, increased defense spending and the future of the United States' military engagement on the continent.
