US President Donald Trump reiterated on Tuesday that he wants Greenland to be brought under US control, arguing that the island is of strategic importance to US national security. The statements were made during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in Ankara.
" I would like the United States to control Greenland. However, that would damage my relationship with NATO ," Trump said.
The US president criticized Denmark, saying it has not invested enough in Greenland and that the territory's importance has increased due to the expanding presence of China and Russia in the Arctic.
" Greenland does not benefit Denmark. Denmark does not spend money on developing it, but for the United States it is a very important part ," he said.
In conclusion, Trump added that "Greenland should be controlled by the United States, not Denmark."
This is not the first time the US president has expressed ambitions for Greenland. He has previously refused to rule out the use of force to take control of the island, and earlier this year proposed a long-term agreement with Denmark. However, US administration officials have continued to emphasize that Greenland remains a target of strategic importance to US national security.
