Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has urged US President Donald Trump not to approve the sale of F-35 fighter jets to Turkey, warning that such a decision would upset the balance of power in the Middle East and strengthen a state that, according to him, is not a reliable ally of the US.
Just hours after US President Donald Trump said he was considering selling F-35 fighter jets to Turkey, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly opposed the idea, although he downplayed any disagreement with the US president.
In an interview with CNN, Netanyahu warned that the sale of the most advanced American fighter jets would not make Turkey a more reliable ally of the United States.
"This does not make Turkey a friendly country to the United States," Netanyahu said.
Referring to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, he described Ankara as "a regime influenced by the Muslim Brotherhood, which hates the United States."
Netanyahu also added that "Erdogan is not exactly an exemplary ally of the United States. He threatens to destroy my country, the only Jewish state."
His comments come at a time when verbal tensions between Israel and Turkey have increased. Last week, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said in an interview with CNN Turk that Israel has "become a burden that humanity can no longer bear."
This statement was condemned by the Israeli Foreign Minister, who described it as "incitement to genocide."
Netanyahu warned that supplying Turkey with the F-35 would have consequences for the region. "This is not a force for peace and stability. When you give them that power, you will see aggression behind it," he said.
The Israeli president announced that he had directly asked President Trump not to approve the sale of the aircraft, arguing that such a decision "would destroy the balance of power in the Middle East."
However, Trump, who is in Turkey for a NATO summit, has indicated that he is willing to reconsider the ban imposed during his first term to exclude Ankara from the F-35 program. He described Turkey as an "extraordinary" ally of the United States.
Relations with Trump
Despite differences over the Turkey issue, Netanyahu denied that there is a rift between him and the US president.
