US President Donald Trump's visit to the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, is expected to bring a confrontation between one of Israel's closest allies and one of its main opponents.
Turkey and Israel have recently escalated their rhetoric towards each other, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will closely follow Trump's meetings with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan declared last week in an interview with CNN Turk that Israel has become "a burden that humanity can no longer bear."
On the other hand, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar condemned these statements, calling them "classic incitement to genocide," and called on NATO to react. According to an Israeli source, Netanyahu has also raised this issue in talks with Trump.
One of Israel's main concerns is Trump's stated intention to sell Turkey advanced F-35 fighter jets, a deal that Israel is trying to block through its allies in Washington.
Netanyahu made this concern public in an interview with Fox News, warning that arming " a regime infected by the Muslim Brotherhood " would " disrupt the balance of power in the Middle East, which is ultimately guaranteed by Israeli air superiority and American presence . "
The Israeli source told CNN that Netanyahu has also raised the issue privately with Trump, arguing that the F-35 sale could damage Israel's qualitative military advantage.
"The message from the administration was that, even if the sale is approved and goes through, it will take a significant amount of time for it to materialize," the source said.
