The High Court in London has dismissed a £50 million lawsuit brought by Prince Harry, Doreen Lawrence and several prominent public figures, including Elton John and Elizabeth Hurley, against the publisher of the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday, Associated Newspapers.
The plaintiffs alleged that the media company used illegal methods to obtain information, including wiretapping, invasion of privacy and other illegal practices. However, after a three-month trial, Judge Nicklin dismissed all 97 claims.
According to the decision, the Associated Newspapers journalists provided credible explanations for how they had obtained the published information. The court accepted their testimony and concluded that there was insufficient evidence to prove the use of illegal methods alleged by the plaintiffs.
After the verdict was announced, a spokesman for Associated Newspapers called it "a huge victory for the Daily Mail, its journalists and press freedom." He said the more serious allegations, such as the planting of bugging devices, phone monitoring and unauthorized access to bank accounts, were not supported by credible evidence.
Prince Harry traveled from California to London to testify in person in court. During his testimony, he also spoke about the impact he said the media pressure has had on his wife, Meghan Markle, describing the situation as "absolute misery."
In the decision, Judge Nicklin assessed that the prince's testimony was sincere, but emphasized that its emotional elements did not change the facts and evidence on which the court's final decision was based.
