The first leg of the World Cup quarter-final between Spain and Belgium, taking place at Los Angeles' SoFi Stadium, ended in a 1-1 draw.
“La Roja” took the lead in the 30th minute. After a cross from Pedro Porro from the right wing, Dani Olmo first tried to beat Thibaut Courtois, but the Belgian goalkeeper reacted correctly. The ball remained in the area and Fabian Ruiz was the fastest to send it into the net, unblocking the challenge.
Five minutes later, Spain came very close to scoring a second goal. Lamie Jamal executed a free kick perfectly, but again Courtois proved decisive with a spectacular save.
Belgium responded in the 41st minute and, in their first serious chance, restored parity. Charles De Keteler headed in a precise cross from Timoti Kastanj, beating Unai Simon for the first time in this World Cup.
After the first 45 minutes, everything remains open. The team that will secure qualification from this match will face France in the semi-finals.
