Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that US President Donald Trump had promised him five F-35 fighter jets, ahead of a bilateral meeting between the two leaders on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in Ankara.
" The American president promised me five F-35 fighter jets ," Erdogan said in statements to the media.
Asked about this issue, Trump responded that the possibility would be considered.
" Why not? Turkey has proven in many ways to be a much more loyal ally than some other countries. It's something we'll look into ," the US president declared.
Trump also announced that the United States will lift CAATSA sanctions on Turkey.
" We will lift the sanctions. The time has come. We don't want to impose sanctions on our friends and I don't want to suffocate my friend with sanctions ," he said.
The meeting between Trump and Erdogan takes place within the framework of the NATO Summit, which is being held on July 7 and 8 in Ankara. The two leaders were welcomed with an official ceremony at the "Beştepe" Presidential Palace, where the national anthems of both countries were played and military honors were held.
Trump arrived in Ankara on Tuesday afternoon and was greeted by President Erdogan at the airport. During the ceremony, the US president greeted the Honor Guard in Turkish with the words "Merhaba asker" ("Hello, soldier").
The visit marks the first trip by a US president to Ankara in 17 years.
The American delegation also includes Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
This year's summit is taking place in a tense geopolitical climate. At the center of discussions are strengthening the Alliance's defense capabilities, increasing member countries' military spending, support for Ukraine, and developments in the Middle East.
