Prime Minister Edi Rama continues to justify the fact that he removed 4 million euros from the emergency fund for Kanye West's concert in Tirana, at a time when Albania has been protesting for 42 days over the social and economic problems the country is mired in.
Rama describes the concert as an influential event for Albania's international image and the country's economy.
According to the Prime Minister, the concert was not just a musical performance, but an event that, thanks to the global fame of the American artist and the power of social networks, put Albania in the spotlight worldwide.
The head of government also commented on the criticism that accompanied the organization of the concert, saying that the event became a point of conflict and division in public opinion.
"Last night, Albania did not simply organize a concert. Albania organized an event, which, thanks to social channels and the global fame of the protagonist, became news in every corner of the world. In Albania, this time, the event became a very wild motive for division, where a frenzy of violence and stupidity was unleashed against a concert. I heard the same refrain, the people have no bread, poverty is at its peak, we do not want concerts. This approach seems to be debatable. This is a fundamental misunderstanding of how a country develops. Development is not a fixed-size loaf of bread," he emphasized.
Rama argued that the development of a country should not be seen only through immediate expenditures, but also through the value that such events create in the longer term.
"The most important question is not simply how much it costs, but also how much value it creates. An expense ends the moment it is made, an investment continues to produce value even after it is made," the prime minister said.
According to him, a concert of such magnitude brings benefits to various sectors of the economy, starting from hospitality, restaurants, cafes, transportation and security services.
"A grand concert does not only leave behind a beautiful memory, it leaves money in the coffers of hotels, restaurants, cafes, transportation enterprises, security and of course those who take part. It creates profits for business, while also collecting income for the state through taxes, and millions of eyes directed towards Albania," Rama said.
In conclusion, the Prime Minister emphasized that organizing major international events helps promote the country as an open destination for tourism and investment.
"It shows the world that this country, even when there are protests, has hospitality, has security. A free, democratic country, where you have no hesitation in coming, resting and investing."
Today's Albania must ask how much value is created from this investment. Don't forget, there is a much greater poverty than the lack of sufficient income, the poverty of the aspirants. Poverty is not fought by not giving concerts, but also by giving concerts. Well-being grows by creating value, by attracting capital, ideas, people. Pensions are not paid for by pessimism, hospitals are not built by rejecting every great initiative. Well-being arises from the courage to look further, to aim higher, by creating more value. Two more words about the 4 million euros. They are constantly throwing poison, from pensioners to the youngest, they must be exposed that those 4 million euros were a last-minute investment, to save the investment for Albania. Investment to not open a wound of distrust towards an Albania, where everyone has their eyes. "Those 4 million euros would not have come out, but for the threats, blackmail, and violent hysteria of social networks, where a minority of people think they can impose the government on businesses that do not think like them. The people speak with their votes. They are adventurers caught ," Rama concluded.
