The former Iranian president appeared in public for the first time since the start of the war, although local media had earlier reported that he had lost his life.

A surprise appearance by former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at the funeral ceremony of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has brought into focus the reliability of information broadcast by official Iranian media.

Ahmadinejad, who led Iran as president from 2005 to 2013, was reported dead by some local media on the day the war broke out, following Israeli and American attacks that hit leaders in Tehran.

According to these reports, he was believed to have died after a missile hit near his residence. In the months that followed, he did not appear in public and there was no official communication from him. Although Iranian authorities never officially confirmed his death, the information was broadcast by Iranian state-controlled media.

However, on Monday, Ahmadinejad made his first public appearance since the war began in February. He was spotted among the crowd attending a funeral in Tehran, wearing a jacket and a mask around his neck.

Ali Khamenei's coffin, draped in the Iranian flag, as well as the coffins of his family members who were killed on February 28 in an airstrike, were placed on a vehicle decorated to resemble the ornamental grille surrounding an imam's mausoleum.

Iranian authorities encouraged mass participation in the ceremony as a show of force, at a time when the Islamic Republic is conducting negotiations with the United States to reach an agreement aimed at permanently ending the war.

Aerial footage broadcast by Iranian state television showed a very large crowd stretching for kilometers.

According to the broadcast, the turnout appeared to be larger than that at the funeral ceremony of Revolutionary Guard commander Qasem Soleimani in 2020, which had gathered over a million participants.

Iranian authorities have not yet released an official estimate of the number of attendees.
