From internationally wanted to victim: What happened to the suspect in the Monaco attack?

New details have emerged about the death of Anastasia Berezovskaya, the woman considered the prime suspect in the package bomb attack in Monaco that injured a sanctioned Ukrainian multibillionaire and members of his family.

The 39-year-old Ukrainian woman was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head, and the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced that two people have been arrested on suspicion of her murder.

According to the SBU, Berezovska returned to Ukraine on July 1, just two days after the explosion in Monaco. There, she allegedly met with family members, but also with two men: a former police officer and a serving officer of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.

Initially, the two were investigated as possible accomplices in the Monaco attack, after authorities discovered that they had made several money transfers to Berezovsky's bank accounts and cryptocurrency wallets.

Subsequently, according to Ukrainian authorities, the intelligence officer admitted to having participated in her murder along with another person.

A room resembling a "torture chamber" is discovered

The investigation took an even more serious turn during a search of the former police officer's apartment, where authorities discovered an underground space that, according to the SBU, "resembled a torture chamber."

Both arrested have been placed in custody and are being investigated for premeditated murder committed in collaboration. Investigations are ongoing.

What is known about the attack in Monaco?

Monaco's deputy prosecutor, Morgan Raymond, stated that Berezovska had spent several days observing the target and that on the day of the attack she was disguised as a man.

Authorities initially believed she had fled Monaco in a rental car to Italy and then to Germany. On Thursday, German special forces searched an apartment in the state of Hesse rented by a 39-year-old Ukrainian woman who police believed was on the run.

On Friday, Interpol issued a red notice against Berezovskaya, declaring her internationally wanted for attempted murder, placing an explosive device in a public place with criminal intent, and participation in a criminal organization.
