The controversy between France captain Kylian Mbappe and Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla has escalated, after the latter demanded a public apology from the French footballer and warned that she may take legal action against him.
The debate began after France's 1-0 victory over Paraguay in the round of 16 of the World Cup, a match decided by a penalty scored by Mbappe. After the Paraguayan national team was eliminated, Amarila published a series of racist comments on social media towards the French striker.
In his reaction on the X platform, Mbappe condemned the senator's statements, describing them as racist and filled with hatred.
" You are a disgusting woman and you do not represent the people of Paraguay ," Mbappe wrote, while also praising the performance and fight of the Paraguayan national team during the tournament.
The French Football Federation subsequently announced that it had referred the senator's statements to the competent authorities for further legal proceedings. The federation's president, Philippe Diallo, also strongly condemned the insults to the footballer and France. Meanwhile, the Paraguayan government distanced itself from Amarilla's comments, stating that it "condemns and rejects" them and that it remains committed to respect, equality and human rights.
However, the senator did not completely back down from her stance. In a lengthy statement, she admitted that she regretted the language she used and that she had deleted the post.
" I regret offending you with the same insults that I have received, because I too have been looked down upon for being of mixed and Latino descent. I realized that I was repeating patterns that I hate and deleted the post ," Amarila wrote.
Despite this, she demanded that Mbappe also apologize.
" Now I ask that you also withdraw your statement and apologize to me. I will not tolerate your violence either ."
Amarila emphasized that the dispute is not related to France, but only to the footballer.
" The problem is between me and you. I have never said anything against France. On the contrary, I am with you. I studied in a French school from the age of two to 17, I speak French and I like to visit France. The problem is with you. "
The senator accused Mbappe of arrogance and contempt towards Paraguayan footballers during the match, claiming that his behavior had hurt her entire country.
At the end of the reaction, Amarila defended her political mandate and accused the French attacker of "political violence against women."
" Who are you to call me unworthy or disgusting, when you don't know me at all? This is pure gender violence. Political violence against a woman who was elected by the vote of her people. You despise me precisely because I am a woman ."
In conclusion, the senator called on Mbappe to apologize and retract his statements, warning that, otherwise, she could pursue legal action for what she describes as gender-based political violence.
So far, Kylian Mbappe has not publicly reacted to the Paraguayan senator's latest statement.
