At the state funeral of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, thousands of people took part in a symbolic ceremony known as the "stoning of the devil", throwing pebbles at an image of US President Donald Trump, according to footage published by the Iranian state news agency Mizan.
The "stoning of the devil" ritual is part of the Islamic Hajj pilgrimage, during which believers throw small stones at pillars symbolizing the devil, as a sign of rejection of evil.
The streets of Tehran were filled with men, women and children dressed in black, carrying flags of the Islamic Republic and pictures of Ali Khamenei. Banners with messages against the United States and Israel were also seen during the ceremony, while the traditional chants of "Death to America," which have been part of Iranian state-organized rallies for decades, were also heard.
Among the crowd were banners depicting Donald Trump in the form of a "wanted" poster, as well as messages calling for revenge against those Iran holds responsible for Khamenei's assassination. Some banners even mentioned a symbolic reward for anyone who would avenge the former leader's death.
According to international media, Ali Khamenei's funeral has turned into a powerful political manifestation, with Iranian authorities and regime supporters repeating calls for revenge against the United States and Israel, whom Tehran blames for his assassination.
