Meet the EU official who worked with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Ursula von der Leyen.
Ignazio Cocchiere has been travelling the world, from New York to Brazil, as a policy assistant in the Cabinet of EU Climate Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra since December, but he was once a professional footballer who trained with legends like Ibrahimović, Patrick Vieira and Luís Figo, and later scored one of the most important goals in the recent history of Belgian football.
To this day, supporters of Union Saint-Gilloise in Brussels chant Cocchiere's name, after he saved them from relegation to the fourth division of Belgian football with a crucial late-season goal against Leopoldsburg in a crucial last-minute match of the season in 2013.
The historic Brussels club, much loved by football fans across the European quarter, including past and present European commissioners, spent the next decade climbing to the top of Belgian football, culminating in winning the top division in 2025 and qualifying for this year's Champions League: the pinnacle of European club football.
On Tuesday night, USG plays against Italian giants Inter Milan. The match holds special significance for Cocchiere: He played for both clubs.
In an interview with Politico, the 38-year-old Cocchiere spoke about his journey from playing in the same Inter under-20 team as Italian rebel Mario Balotelli, to his key role in saving USG from potential extinction, to working as an EU official at the Berlaymont, and why he wouldn't change a thing.
"No regrets, zero. Because I would have preferred to have a shorter career in football and end up where I am now," Cocchiere said of his origin story, while humbly enjoying a Bufalina pizza and Coca-Cola in an Italian restaurant near the Commission's headquarters.
The significance of Cocchiere's goal is not lost on senior figures at USG, not least current owner and chairman Alex Muzio, the benefactor and mastermind behind the club's rise to the top of Belgian football.
"The reality is that without the Union legends of their time like Ignazio, there might not have been a club to revive," Muzio told Politico.
A career from parading the Italian Under-20 team's winners' trophy alongside the winning Inter team in front of 80,000 roaring fans at Milan's iconic San Siro stadium, to writing a thesis on the EU Civil Protection Mechanism is unusual, to say the least.

Pas përfundimit të studimeve, Cocchiere filloi të punonte në Parlamentin Europian në vitin 2015 si ndihmës i eurodeputetëve konservatorë italianë Lorenzo Cesa dhe më pas Stefano Maullu.
Pas tre vitesh në Parlament, Cocchiere u zhvendos në role si oficer politikash në njësinë e sportit të Komisionit (natyrisht), pastaj një punë si oficer shtypi në shërbimin e zëdhënësit dhe — përfundimisht — në Kabinetin e Hoekstra, menaxhimin e të cilit ai e krahason me atë të një trajneri të suksesshëm futbolli.

Cocchiere told Politico that he is as proud of having built a successful career in Brussels institutions as anything he has achieved on the pitch, although the iconic goal that helped save the US government holds a special place in his memory.
"Because this was a kind of turning point in the history of the club. So it's something bigger than you. Something that's more about a club, about a community, about a city," he said.
Between the opportunities football offered and the security academics provided, does Cocchiere have any regrets about where he ended up? One of his former Inter teammates, Leonardo Bonucci, won the Euro 2021 championship with Italy and became only the sixth player to make more than 500 appearances for the iconic Juventus club. Balotelli led Italy to the Euro 2012 final and excelled in the English Premier League for Manchester City.
"I think it's probably the best decision, one of the things I don't regret at all," he said.
But yes, he is still playing now in Braine-l'Alleud, south of Brussels. Still trying to add to the more than 150 goals he has scored in the Belgian football league.
