
The Rieti prosecutor's office has ordered the detention of three people, suspected of "intentional murder in collaboration", following raids and investigations into the stone attack on a bus carrying Pistoia Basket fans. The victim was the 65-year-old driver, Raffaele Marianella, who died during the attack.
At the center of the investigation, coordinated by prosecutor Paolo Auriemma, are Manuel Fortuna (31 years old), Kevin Pellecchia (31 years old) and Alessandro Barberini (53 years old).
Investigators believe that Marianella was hit in the face by a stone, while an initial examination extremely warned that the blow was fatal. The autopsy already ordered by the authorities is expected to clarify the exact cause of death. To identify the physical perpetrator of the stone throwing, the prosecution has also ordered a DNA analysis on the stone that is thought to have caused the blow, a test that, if it gives a positive result, could directly link a person to the act.
The attack occurred shortly after the end of the match between Pistoia Basket and RSR Sebastiani at the “PalaSojourner” sports palace. The investigation immediately led to an ultras faction of the local club — Curva Terminillo — and the authorities carried out arrests and interrogations throughout the night, initially bringing twelve people, including a minor, to the police station. From further verifications, three of them were taken into custody as the main suspects.
The police state that the Digos of Rieti, the Squadra Mobile and the Volante patrols were part of the operation. According to investigators, during the attack the escort force following the bus noticed several masked people quickly leaving, using vehicles parked under an underpass; one of these vehicles was stopped and the passengers were taken for further checks.
Investigators are analyzing footage from security cameras in the area to reconstruct the chronology and identify others involved. According to information so far, participation in the attack appears to have been collective in nature, with several people throwing stones at the bus.
