British police have arrested a 26-year-old man suspected of murdering former Conservative minister Ann Widdecombe, who was found dead in her apartment.

A white British man has been arrested in connection with the incident, according to Devon and Cornwall Police. Authorities said the 78-year-old woman was found in her home with serious injuries and that an investigation into the crime of murder is underway.

Her management stated that the family and relatives have gone through “a very traumatic and painful 24 hours.” In their initial response to the announcement of the death, they did not provide details on the place, time, or circumstances in which the former minister lost her life.

The incident has sparked strong reactions in British politics. Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the murder investigation "shocking news", adding that the suspect is "clearly a dangerous person".

Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch also reacted after the arrest, saying she was "shocked" by the incident, which she described as "horrific".
