Colombia's Jaminton Campaz has been the subject of death threats after his country's elimination from the World Cup. The striker missed a golden opportunity in the 115th minute of the match against Switzerland, a moment that could have given Colombia the goal of qualification.
The incident brought back memories of one of the most tragic episodes in Colombian football. In the 1994 World Cup, Andres Escobar scored an own goal in a match against the United States, a defeat that led to the team's elimination. Just days later, he was shot dead outside a bar in Medellin.
According to reports from Infobae, Kampaz received serious threats after the match. The situation forced the player not to travel with the rest of the team on the return flight to Colombia, for security reasons.
In a message published on social media, Kampaz thanked the fans for their support, expressed his pain over the elimination and called for football not to become a source of hatred.
" Since I was little, I have dreamed of defending the colors of Colombia, hearing the national anthem, representing millions of people and scoring a goal in a World Cup. Today I can only thank God for giving me the opportunity to realize this dream. They are memories that I will carry with me forever."
I want to thank from the bottom of my heart everyone who was with us during this World Cup, those who believed in us, supported us until the last minute and never stopped believing. Thank you also to my family, who has been my strength every step of the way and has stood by me in both the happiest and the most difficult moments.
For my entire country, I can only say that I share the pain of this elimination. We too dreamed of moving forward and I know well the sadness that we feel today as Colombians. I am deeply sorry that I was not able to give you the joy that we were all waiting for, but I want you to know that we never lacked dedication, commitment and love for this shirt. I gave everything I had on the field and I would do it again, a thousand times, for my country.
Football is also made up of difficult moments. Today, all we have to do is learn, get up and keep working to come back even stronger.
"My Colombia, please let us never lose respect for each other. We may think differently, feel disappointment or sadness, but no passion justifies hatred and living in fear ," Kampaz wrote.
