A court in Colombia has ordered the seizure of a villa belonging to former national team goalkeeper Rene Higuita as part of an investigation into the origin of the property.
According to the court ruling, the villa was allegedly originally purchased with money derived from the criminal activities of the drug cartel led by Pablo Escobar, before passing into Higuita's ownership in 1992.
The former goalkeeper, known by the nickname "El Loko", is part of an investigation launched by the Prosecutor's Office in 2014 to verify the origin of an apartment purchased in the elite El Poblado neighborhood of Medellín. This city is the birthplace of Higuita, now 59, but also the former center of operations of the Escobar cartel, who was killed by Colombian police in 1993.
Following the decision of the first instance court in Medellín, which confirmed the confiscation of the property, Higuita publicly stated that he would appeal the decision.
The former Atletico Nacional goalkeeper has insisted that he purchased the house legally during the 1990s, with his own funds, denying any links or involvement with drug trafficking organizations.
