Challenge against PSV, 180 Napoli fans are stopped in the center of Eindhoven

On the eve of the Champions League match against PSV, around 180 Napoli fans were stopped in the centre of Eindhoven, in the Netherlands.

The large group of Italian fans was escorted to the police station on Mathildelaan by three buses. Four PSV supporters were also detained.

Police authorities explained that there were no real clashes, but the intervention was necessary to prevent incidents, Italian media report.

The police described the Napoli fans as a “large group” and spoke of a “certain atmosphere”, implying a potentially problematic situation: the agents had asked the fans to leave the city center, but their request had been ignored. The fans were arrested for violating the municipal regulation on gatherings and were taken by bus to the Mathildelaan police station for questioning. Some of the people detained did not have tickets for tonight’s Champions League match between PSV and Napoli.

Eindhoven Mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem had earlier set up a high-risk security zone in anticipation of the match, a measure that allows police to carry out preventive checks in the city center and other areas of the city.

Local law enforcement agencies have been on alert for days due to fears of incidents, and a climate of high public order tension prevails around the Champions League match between PSV and Napoli, as a result of very bad relations between the two ultras factions.

The locals are linked by a long-standing friendship with Inter supporters, while the guests with those of Feyenoord. 1600 fans are expected from Italy and since yesterday evening the controls in the city were very intensified, as through social networks the idea of a meeting, of course not at all friendly, between the Dutch and the Italians to "settle scores" had spread.

The night before the match was tense, precisely because of the risk of clashes. The first Napoli fans to arrive in Eindhoven, despite the rain and the "curfew" in a city that had been almost deserted since the early hours of the evening, were still gathered in the city center. This led the police to try to disperse them, fearing contact with the Dutch ultras. When they refused, arrests were made, the beginning of a day that promises to be long on the public order front. All roads leading to the stadium will be blocked again today.
