Suffered a life-threatening brain hemorrhage, the unique story of the striker
Mexico striker Raul Jimenez

Mexico has successfully started its journey to the 2026 World Cup, triumphing 2-0 over South Africa at the legendary Azteca Stadium.

The spotlight was on veteran striker Raul Jiménez, who scored his first World Cup goal at the age of 35. In his fourth appearance in the competition, he sealed the victory with a precise header from Roberto Alvarado's assist, experiencing one of the most emotional moments of his career.

With this achievement, Jimenez reached the 46th goal for Mexico, tying Jared Borget for second place among the top scorers in the history of the national team. The record is still held by Javier “Chicharito” Hernández with 52 goals.

The goal has a special meaning for the Mexican striker, who in 2020 went through one of the most difficult moments of his life and career. During a match between Wolverhampton and Arsenal, Jimenez suffered a serious skull injury, which caused a fracture and bleeding in the brain, putting at risk not only his sporting career, but also his life.

After a long period of rehabilitation and recovery, he managed to return to the highest levels of football. The goal against South Africa represents a clear testament to his strength, determination and perseverance, as Jimenez continues to make history with the Mexican national team.
