Italy's absence from the World Cup for years continues to spark reactions and comments in the football world. The four-time World Champions risk being left out of the most prestigious football tournament for the third time in a row, a situation that has often made them the object of international irony and ridicule.
Recently, FIFA president Gianni Infantino joined the comments with a joke during an interview with "CazéTV" while discussing the possibility of further expanding the World Cup.
" First we have to see how this World Cup with 48 teams will go. It is a very big event. We have also discussed the possibility of a World Cup with 64 teams, with an even greater involvement of countries from all over the world ," Infantino declared.
The head of FIFA explained that the idea has been discussed within the organization's leadership structures, but stressed that the focus is currently on the first edition with 48 teams.
" It has been discussed in the FIFA Council, but now let's enjoy this World Cup with 48 teams ," he added.
In the end, Infantino could not resist the temptation to make an ironic comment about the Italian national team.
" Maybe Italy will qualify with 64 national teams. Who knows? Maybe we can bring the number to 208 and see if it qualifies ," he said humorously, referring to the number of FIFA member federations.
Italy has not participated in the last two editions of the World Cup, after being eliminated in the qualifying stages for the 2018 and 2022 tournaments. This long absence for one of the most successful national teams in football history has continued to be a topic of discussion and irony in the international sporting arena.
