The World Cup taking place in North America has set an unusual record even before the tournament ends. According to a study published by the company specializing in climate technologies, “Greenly”, this World Cup is expected to be the most polluted in the history of the competition.

Estimates show that total carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions could reach around 7.8 million tonnes, a figure that is approximately 2.1 times higher than that officially reported during the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

However, the main difference is not only related to the amount of emissions, but also to their source. At Qatar 2022, a significant part of the pollution was caused by the construction of sports infrastructure, as the host country built seven new stadiums for the tournament.

Unlike that edition, the current World Cup is taking place mainly in existing stadiums, which means that infrastructure represents only about 3 percent of total projected emissions.

The largest part of the carbon footprint is related to transportation. According to the study, about 87 percent of emissions will come from fan and delegation travel. The organization of matches in different countries in North America, as well as the large distances between host cities, is expected to significantly increase the use of air and road transport.

Experts estimate that it is precisely these massive movements of spectators from all over the world that make this edition the most burdensome for the environment, despite the fact that no new stadiums have been built.

If these projections are confirmed, the World Cup in North America will go down in history not only for the sporting spectacle, but also as the event with the greatest environmental impact ever organized within the framework of the World Cup.
