Italy is back in the media spotlight after another major failure, missing out on another World Cup for the third time in a row. The elimination of one of the most historic teams in world football is considered a heavy blow to Italian football, leaving it in a state of disappointment and reflection.
However, for some fans, especially Real Madrid fans, this development is seen from another perspective. According to a coincidence observed over the years, Italy's absence from the World Cup has often coincided with the Madrid club's successes in the Champions League.
One of the earliest instances dates back to 1958, when Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup. In the same season, Real Madrid won their third consecutive European Cup, defeating Milan in the final 3–2, in a match that featured Alfredo Di Stéfano.
Another similar episode was recorded in 2017. Italy missed out on the chance to participate in the 2018 World Cup in Russia, after being eliminated by Sweden in the play-offs. In that season, Real Madrid, under the leadership of Zinedine Zidane, managed to win the Champions League for the third year in a row, a historic achievement in the modern era of the competition.
The same situation was repeated in 2022. Italy, under the leadership of Roberto Mancini, was surprisingly eliminated by North Macedonia in the play-offs, with a decisive goal by Aleksandar Trajkovski in the 91st minute.
In the same season, Real Madrid, managed by Carlo Ancelotti, managed to triumph in the Champions League again. The Madrid team secured the trophy after a season characterized by spectacular upsets, defeating Liverpool in the final thanks to the only goal of Vinicius Junior.
