Former Finance Minister Arben Malaj has publicly called for the removal of Prime Minister Edi Rama from leading the country, arguing that he can no longer bring positive developments to Albania.
Malaj commented on the recent protests demanding the resignation of the head of government. According to him, the decision to remain in office or not belongs to the prime minister himself, but any attempt to remain in power is bringing governance closer to increasingly authoritarian forms.
"Whether Rama leaves or not, that is up to him. But his every insistence, for me, is a self-transition to actions that approach not simply autocracy, but a neo-dictatorial stance ," Malaj declared.
The former minister added that history has shown that dictatorial regimes have not had a good ending and assessed that Albania needs a calmer political and social climate.
"It's time for him to leave. He can no longer do anything good for Albania. This climate of social division, tensions between Albanians, between political parties and different groups do not serve the country ," Malaj said on A2 CNN.
His statements come at a time of political debate and protests, where the opposition and various civic groups have raised criticism of the government and demanded changes in the country's leadership.
