United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed concern about Israeli airstrikes in Beirut, warning that they could jeopardize diplomatic efforts to reach an agreement between the United States and Iran.
In an official statement, Guterres stressed that the attacks occurred at a particularly delicate moment for the region, despite the ceasefire that was in place.
"The attacks occurred despite the ceasefire and at a time when the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran are expected to reach an agreement that will pave the way for a peaceful resolution to this conflict," the UN chief declared.
He called on all parties to avoid actions that could escalate the situation and maintain space for dialogue.
"I call on all parties to show maximum restraint at this crucial moment and I strongly hope for a successful outcome of the continued efforts by the United States and Iran," Guterres added.
The secretary-general's statement comes at a time when the international community is closely following developments in the Middle East, amid fears that tensions between Israel, Iran and their allies could undermine efforts for a diplomatic solution.
