Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been placed under house arrest after Iranian authorities uncovered his suspected contacts with Israeli intelligence services, The New York Times reports, citing four senior Iranian officials.
According to the investigation published by the American newspaper, Iranian security structures have discovered Ahmadinejad's network of contacts with Israel, which led to his being placed under strict surveillance.
The New York Times report revealed that Mossad had been conducting a covert operation for years to recruit the former Iranian president and groom him as a figure who could take over Iran in the event of a regime change.
According to the newspaper, Ahmadinejad held secret meetings with Israeli officials during his visits to Budapest, while former Mossad director David Barnea had personally traveled to Hungary to meet him.
The article also reveals that Israel had secretly financed close associates of Ahmadinejad and that the contacts continued until before the Israeli military operation codenamed "Roaring Lion."
So far, Iranian authorities have not made an official announcement about Ahmadinejad's house arrest, while the former president himself has not reacted to The New York Times' reporting.
