Another fatal incident during an operation by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has shocked the United States, adding to pressure for greater transparency and accountability for federal agents.
A person was killed Monday in the city of Biddeford, Maine, in an incident involving ICE agents, Maine House Speaker Ryan Fecteau confirmed.
" One person was killed. ICE was involved. State Police and the Department of Public Safety are on the scene gathering information, and the FBI is expected to take over the investigation ," Fecteau said.
Authorities have not yet released the victim's identity or the circumstances of the incident. Biddeford police confirmed only that it was a "police incident" and that there was no danger to the community.
The incident comes just days after Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican immigrant on his way to work, was killed by an ICE agent during a traffic stop in Houston. Authorities initially said the operation was directed at him, but later admitted he was not the target of the operation.
The series of incidents has brought the methods used by federal immigration agents back to the forefront of debate. Maine Democratic Representative Chellie Pingree reacted sharply after the incident, saying she was "shocked and outraged" and calling for a full investigation into the case.
" Why are you in Maine? " she asked, publicly addressing the ICE agents.
In January, the US administration launched a massive crackdown on illegal immigration in Maine, codenamed "Operation Catch of the Day." The operation was opposed by human rights organizations, while the ACLU filed a lawsuit against federal authorities, accusing them of illegally detaining a lawful immigrant.
Following Monday's incident, civil society organizations have begun to mobilize. The Maine Resists movement has called for an emergency protest in Biddeford, while Project Relief said it is in contact with the victim's family.
