The former Iranian president held secret meetings with Israeli services in Budapest, while the plan envisaged the overthrow of the regime in Tehran and his return to power.
An investigation published by The New York Times reveals one of the most unusual operations of Israeli intelligence, centered on former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
The American newspaper, citing American and Iranian officials, writes that Mossad conducted a secret operation for years to recruit Ahmadinejad and prepare him as the figure who would take over Iran's leadership in the event of the fall of the Islamic Republic.
According to the report, it all started in early 2024, when the rector of Ludovika University in Budapest, Professor Gergely Deli, received a highly confidential request from a senior Hungarian government official to organize a conference on climate change with the participation of Ahmadinejad.
The conference, however, served only as a cover. The real purpose was to hold secret meetings between the former Iranian president and Mossad agents in the Hungarian capital.
The importance of the operation was so great that the then director of Mossad, David Barnea, personally traveled to Budapest to meet with Ahmadinejad. The Israeli services then informed the CIA about their contacts with the former Iranian leader.
According to The New York Times, Israel secretly financed Ahmadinejad's travel and accommodation expenses for several years, while Mossad agents regularly met him during his trips outside Iran.
The operation culminated in late February of this year, during the first days of the war between the US, Israel and Iran. The plan called for Ahmadinejad to be removed from Tehran, launched an uprising against the regime, and installed as head of state.
The plan failed.
On February 28, an Israeli airstrike hit the compound where Ahmadinejad resided, destroying the bodyguard building and his armored vehicle. Shortly after the attack, a black Peugeot arrived at the scene, picked up the former Iranian president, and sped away. According to the newspaper's sources, the vehicle was driven by Mossad agents, who transported him to a safe haven inside Iran.
However, Ahmadinejad was disappointed with the operation's progress and left the hideout under unclear circumstances. His trail was lost until last week, when he briefly appeared at the funeral ceremony of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
According to the report, he is now under house arrest under the supervision of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, after Iranian authorities uncovered his network of contacts with Israel.
The investigation reveals that the plan for regime change was not limited to Ahmadinejad. It also included arming and training Kurdish opposition groups in northern Iraq, which were to enter Iranian territory towards Tehran, an operation that never materialized.
Former head of Israeli military intelligence, Tamir Hayman, confirmed in May the existence of a series of special operations, stating that Ahmadinejad was part of this planning.
The article also describes the transformation of the former Iranian president after leaving power in 2013. From one of the most radical figures of the Islamic Republic, he changed his public profile, softened his rhetoric, began appearing in elegant suits, learned English and began promoting political reforms.
According to people close to him, Ahmadinejad believed that only he could lead Iran through a period of transition and had promised allies that, if returned to power, he would recognize Israel and normalize relations between the two countries through the Abraham Accords.
The New York Times also writes that Iranian counterintelligence had begun monitoring Ahmadinejad since 2017, while the first contacts with Israeli agents took place during a trip to Guatemala in 2023. His two visits to Ludovika University in Budapest, in 2024 and 2025, served, according to the investigation, to hold secret meetings with Mossad representatives. /Pamphlet
