The wars that have divided Albanians

What makes you sad is that we, Albanians, from all the liberation wars we have fought, not only have we not been united but we have emerged more divided. After the national wars leading to Independence, we lost Kosovo, Chameria, Plav and Guci, Dibra and other Albanian regions that are today in Macedonia.

On October 17, a large rally under the slogan "Freedom has a name" will be held in Tirana to demand justice for the KLA leaders who are being unjustly held in The Hague. The organizers of this rally, KLA veterans, chose Tirana for this manifestation and invited Albanians from all their ethnic lands, from Kosovo, Macedonia or Montenegro.

However, from the beginning, Berisha's DP announced that it would not participate, since as it stated, it would not be alongside Rama in this manifestation. On October 16, Albin Kurti's Vetëvendosje Movement, in a reaction on this party's Facebook page, not only refused to participate but also accused Prime Minister Rama of initially supporting the establishment of the Special.

Here is what they write: "Reflection is not wrong, but in this regard, many of those who today oppose the Special Court were yesterday the biggest lobbyists for its establishment. Before protesting, these actors and politicians should show at least a minimum of remorse for their wrong positions in the past."

A clear example is the current Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, who even came to Kosovo on an emergency visit by helicopter to convince the parties here to vote in favor of establishing this Court,” their Facebook post says. Rama’s reaction was also immediate: “The Vetëvendosje Movement has written me a long letter, where it is written that 10 years ago I was in favor while they were against the Special Court…

Meanwhile, I have denounced the farce against Hashim Thaçi and others whenever and wherever there has been an opportunity or need, while the Movement is known to have moved in that direction. But I am not in any kind of competition with the Movement and I regret that the Movement confuses Kosovo's institutional relations with Albania in the mud of municipal runoffs, while regarding the positions of the past 10 years – when it did not even recognize the Kosovo anthem, let alone the innocence of Hashim Thaçi, whom it would love eternally in The Hague – I remind the Movement that the Special Court was established for organ trafficking, not to take the President of the Republic of Kosovo hostage.

And finally, I am neither the organizer nor the speaker of the nationwide protest "Justice for the Liberators", which I support wholeheartedly and would join as a simple participant, if I were not aware that any intentional or unintentional politicization of that initiative would damage its purpose and popularity. Then, some media outlets, dealing with this argument, showed Rama's commitment to raising awareness of this injustice in all international organizations where Albania is a member. But this is of little importance.

What is sad is that we, the Albanians, from all the liberation wars we have fought, not only have we not been united but we have emerged more divided. After the national wars leading to Independence, we lost Kosovo, Chameria, Plav and Guci, Dibra and other Albanian regions that are today in Macedonia. After the Second World War we consolidated a crippled state and, in the name of class struggle, we became even more divided.

After the 1990s, when Milosevic began ethnic cleansing in Kosovo, the Kosovo Liberation Army was formed there, which also became a NATO ally whose intervention ended the Serbian occupation of Kosovo. However, after the war ended, Albanians began a witch hunt and continued to fight each other. Accusations and counteraccusations have led to a perception that the war in Kosovo was started by the UDB and that today Kosovo is run by Serbia. After the liberation of Kosovo, a toxic environment was created in that country, as everyone is in a competition to see who will destroy the opponent first and the most.

Serbia managed to turn from an aggressor into a victim and now it shows how Albanians quarrel and how they want to destroy each other. Serbia does not need to present the liberation war that the boys of Kosovo fought as a "drug war" or as a gangster clan because Kosovars themselves do this better. There is no need for foreigners to tell us how divided we are and that we are making a fool of ourselves.

On this occasion, I don't want to remember how the two Germanys were united after the fall of the Berlin Wall without putting anyone on trial, even though one part was Nazi and the other communist. For them, the main thing was Germany.

Now, in the end, President Trump was thanked by Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton and a bunch of his fierce opponents for what he did in Gaza, without thinking twice about what accusations they made to each other, because for them America comes first. Look at what Serbia is doing for three municipalities in northern Kosovo. While we, now that we have all the space and support to show that we are a great and virtuous nation, show in front of everyone that we are boring brawlers who only care about our ego and not Albania. We only love Albania and the flag when we burn tires and set off fireworks after a football match, just like in the banal folklore we have learned.
