After agreement with the US, Iran sets conditions for passage through Hormuz

Iran has announced a set of new rules for ships attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important maritime corridors for global oil trade.

The newly established Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) stated that all commercial vessels must be pre-registered and provided with permits and insurance before being allowed to enter this strategic waterway.

"All ships must be registered and licensed to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz," the Gulf Strait Authority said.

According to Iranian authorities, registration and insurance will be provided free of charge during the 60-day period covered by the recently signed memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States. However, Tehran has hinted that after this period, fees may be charged for security, protection and insurance services.

"During the 60-day period, fees for safety, security and environmental services, as well as relevant Iranian insurance, will not be collected from shipowners and will be covered by the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran ," the PGSA statement said.

The announcement comes a few days after US President Donald Trump declared that passage through the strait would be free for the first 60 days and thereafter.

Iranian authorities also warned that ships must follow a precisely defined route when passing through the strait, in order to avoid mined areas.

"Failure to comply with this rule will be the responsibility of the ship owner," the PGSA stressed.

The new rules came into effect at a time when maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz is gradually recovering after months of uncertainty and restricted movement due to fears of possible Iranian attacks.

According to maritime intelligence company AXSMarine, 25 commercial ships passed through the strait on Thursday, the highest number recorded since April.
