The 2026 World Cup is being characterized by an element that is attracting the attention of fans and football analysts: the high number of red cards awarded by referees in the first phase of the tournament.

There have been 28 matches so far, with 6 red cards issued. This tally exceeds the total number of red cards issued in the previous two World Cups. Qatar 2022 and Russia 2018 each saw four red cards issued across the entire tournament, which featured 64 matches each.

The World Cup hosted in North America also recorded the match with the highest number of red cards so far. It was the opening match between Mexico and South Africa, where the referee issued three red cards. The punished were Mexican Montes and South African footballers Sithole and Zuane.

Meanwhile, Bosnian Muharemovic, as well as Qatari footballers Ahmed and Madibo, were also given red cards.

However, the historical record for the highest number of red cards in a World Cup continues to be held by the 2006 World Cup in Germany. A total of 28 red cards were recorded in that edition.

One of the most famous and fiercest matches in the history of the tournament remains the 1/8 stage clash between the Netherlands and Portugal, known as the “Battle of Nuremberg”. In that challenge, the referee punished the players with 4 red cards and a full 16 yellow cards, making it one of the most tense matches of the World Cup.
