The prolonged protests in Tirana are evolving beyond an internal political clash. After more than a month of daily demonstrations, the pressure on the government of Prime Minister Edi Rama is increasingly linked to issues affecting Albania's international standing, the functioning of its institutions, and the country's path to membership in the European Union.
The latest nationwide protest, symbolically organized on United States Independence Day, reflected the organizers' attempt to extend the political confrontation beyond Albania's borders, with the aim of attracting more international attention.
Organizers called the rally the largest since the beginning of the protest movement and called on citizens from across Albania, as well as the Albanian diaspora, to participate. They reiterated key demands, including the release of those arrested during the recent protests, the resignation of the prime minister, an investigation into allegations against government officials, and the implementation of broader political reforms.
Beyond the immediate demands of the protesters, the developments highlight a long-standing characteristic of the Albanian political system. In a country where European integration has been the main strategic objective of successive governments, domestic political stability is closely linked to international credibility. Progress in the accession process is not assessed solely on the basis of economic indicators, but also according to the quality of democratic institutions, the rule of law, the independence of the judiciary and the ability of the political system to manage social tensions without undermining institutional stability.
In this context, protest organizers are trying to raise the international profile of their movement. During recent demonstrations, they referred to public statements by European politicians and a resolution adopted by the European People's Party (EPP), arguing that it expresses concern about the state of the rule of law in Albania, demands respect for the right to peaceful assembly, and calls for stronger action against high-level corruption.

Ky kapital politik ka kontribuar në forcimin e rolit rajonal të Shqipërisë, avancimin e procesit të integrimit europian dhe ruajtjen e marrëdhënieve të ngushta me Shtetet e Bashkuara dhe institucionet europiane.
Kontrasti mes profilit ndërkombëtar të kryeministrit dhe realitetit të brendshëm politik është bërë më i dukshëm ditët e fundit. Ndërsa Edi Rama mori pjesë si i ftuar nderi në konferencën RuhrSUMMIT në Gjermani dhe u takua me kryeministrin e landit të Renanisë Veriore-Vestfalisë, Hendrik Wüst, protestat vazhdonin në Tiranë, ku demonstruesit kërkuan sërish dorëheqjen e tij. Ky kontrast pasqyron sfidën e dyfishtë të qeverisë: ruajtjen e besimit të partnerëve ndërkombëtarë dhe përballimin e polarizimit politik në vend.
Dimensioni ndërkombëtar i këtyre zhvillimeve është bërë gjithashtu pjesë e debatit publik. Gazetari gjerman Walter Mayr argumenton se Shqipëria mbetet një çështje me prioritet relativisht të ulët në agjendën ndërkombëtare. Në të kundërt, analistët shqiptarë Andi Bushati dhe Lutfi Dervishi vlerësojnë se kohëzgjatja dhe intensiteti i protestave po ndikojnë gradualisht në mënyrën se si mediat ndërkombëtare dhe një pjesë e opinionit publik europian e perceptojnë situatën politike në Shqipëri. Këto janë vlerësime të analistëve dhe nuk përfaqësojnë qëndrime zyrtare të qeverive apo organizatave ndërkombëtare.
Një tjetër zhvillim që i ka dhënë debatit një dimension të ri është një nismë ligjvënëse në Shtetet e Bashkuara. Kongresmeni republikan Joe Wilson ka paraqitur një amendament në Komitetin e Rregullave të Dhomës së Përfaqësuesve, duke propozuar që Departamenti Amerikan i Shtetit dhe Zyra e Drejtorit të Inteligjencës Kombëtare të hartojnë dy raporte mbi zhvillimet në Ballkanin Perëndimor, me fokus të veçantë Shqipërinë dhe Serbinë.
The initiative does not imply acceptance of the claims made against the Albanian government and does not constitute an assessment of responsibility. If the legislative process is completed, the US authorities will have to prepare, within 180 days, a classified report assessing the extent of drug trafficking in Albania and the possible role of state institutions in facilitating or tolerating such activities. The aim is to collect and evaluate information from competent US institutions, not to draw predetermined conclusions.
Regardless of the final outcome of this initiative, its importance lies in the fact that issues that have so far been considered largely part of domestic political conflict may become the subject of institutional scrutiny in the American political system. This development does not in itself signal a change in US policy towards Albania, but it does indicate that certain developments in the Western Balkans are receiving more attention in Washington.
The parallel progression of prolonged protests, growing international debate, and institutional initiatives in the United States reflects a broader reality for Albania. For a country aiming for full membership in the European Union, political stability is no longer just a domestic issue, but is increasingly linked to assessments of the functioning of institutions, the rule of law, and the quality of governance.
The main challenge is not only related to the outcome of the current protests or the duration of the political conflict. It lies in Albania’s ability to maintain institutional credibility, which over the past decade has been one of the most important assets in relations with Western partners. There is currently no indication that the European Union or the United States have changed their official stance towards the Albanian government. However, recent developments show that, for countries aiming for EU membership, domestic political stability and international credibility are becoming two increasingly intertwined dimensions of the same institutional reality. /Adapted Pamphlet /
