British BBC journalist Guy Delauney, who interviewed Prime Minister Edi Rama as part of a report on the protests known as the "flamingo revolution", has shared on social media his impressions of one of the most special moments of the interview.
"Edi Rama's eyes widened significantly when I asked him if we should be worried about him. And I wasn't talking about the Albanian Prime Minister's health ," Delauney wrote in his post.
The journalist further argues that the protests that have been taking place in Tirana for weeks are not only related to the flamingo issue or the project related to Jared Kushner, as some media headlines have suggested, but represent a much broader dissatisfaction.
"While some headlines will tell you that the nightly protests in Albania are about flamingos and Jared Kushner, in reality they are much more than that. In fact, they are about almost everything. And at the heart of this are the allegations against Mr Rama. So I asked: if your closest political allies are under investigation by anti-corruption prosecutors, should we be worried about you too?" , he writes, inviting readers to follow the full BBC News chronicle.
In the BBC report, Delauney points out that some of the prime minister's closest political associates are under investigation by the Special Prosecution Office against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK), including the former deputy prime minister and the mayor of Tirana. In this context, he asks Rama whether Albanians should also be concerned about the integrity of the prime minister himself.
In his response, Rama states:
"I've said it since day one: I want a justice that doesn't look left, doesn't look right, but looks straight. A justice that can't be bought, can't be pressured, and can't be controlled from afar."
At the end of the chronicle, Delauney assesses that the situation remains blocked.
"For the moment, there seems to be a stalemate. The protesters have no intention of leaving, and Rama will not leave either. Thus, flamingos are likely to remain a common sight on the streets of Tirana," the BBC journalist concludes.
