Jewelry worth around 4 million euros has been stolen from the Lalique Museum in northeastern France after thieves broke into the facility in the early hours of Sunday morning and targeted the jewelry collection.

According to a source close to the investigation, around 20 pieces of jewelry were stolen during the robbery. The value of the damage is still being verified, but is estimated at around 4 million euros.

The source told AFP that the perpetrator or perpetrators entered the museum in Wingen-sur-Moder at around 5:30 a.m. local time and immediately headed towards the hall where the jewels were displayed.

According to the same source, the security alarm was activated, but when the security company completed the verifications, a cleaning worker first arrived at the scene, who notified the police.

The Lalique Museum announced on its official website that it will remain closed for several days due to the robbery.

Authorities are analyzing security camera footage in an attempt to identify the perpetrators.

The museum, dedicated to the work of French goldsmith and glassmaker René Lalique, one of the most famous figures of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles, was inaugurated in 2011 near the Lalique company factory.

According to AFP, the robbery brings the issue of security at French museums back into focus, following another high-profile robbery that took place last year in Paris. However, the claim that $102 million worth of jewelry was stolen from the Louvre Museum has not been confirmed by official sources and has been reported controversially, so it should be treated with caution.
