Ankara has completed preparations for the 36th NATO summit, which will take place from 6 to 8 July and is considered one of the most important meetings in the history of the Alliance. Organizers expect a record number of heads of state and government to attend, while the summit takes place at a time when NATO is facing numerous security challenges and debates over financial burden-sharing among allies.
US President Donald Trump will attend the summit, having previously hinted that he might skip the meeting due to his dissatisfaction with the level of defense spending by some European countries. He later confirmed his attendance, according to the report, stressing the importance of relations with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The latter is expected to use the summit to emphasize Turkey's role in the new international security architecture.
Summit program
The summit will open with a press conference by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the International Media Center near the Presidential Complex in Ankara. It will be followed by bilateral meetings and the first working sessions.
The second day will see the NATO Defence Industry Forum (NSDIF), which will bring together representatives from member states and the defence industry. Mark Rutte will inaugurate the forum, while Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz and Defence Minister Yaşar Güler will also deliver speeches, Daily Sabah reports.
According to NATO's official website, an important announcement, dubbed the "Big Reveal", will also be made during the forum. Cooperation agreements between countries and defense industry companies are also expected to be signed. Turkish media report that Mark Rutte and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will make a joint statement to the media during the forum.
In the evening, NATO foreign ministers will meet with their counterparts from Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates as part of the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI), established in 2004 to strengthen security cooperation with partners in the Middle East. The meeting comes at a time when the region continues to grapple with the fallout from escalating tensions between Israel, Iran and the United States.

Drejtori i Komunikimit i Presidencës turke, Burhanettin Duran, deklaroi se diskutimet do të përqendrohen në zbatimin e vendimit për rritjen e investimeve në mbrojtje, forcimin e aftësive parandaluese dhe mbrojtëse të Aleancës, si dhe në një vlerësim të plotë të kërcënimeve ndaj rajonit euroatlantik.
Sipas tij, liderët do të diskutojnë gjithashtu luftën në Ukrainë dhe zhvillimet në jug të NATO-s, me fokus situatën në Lindjen e Mesme. Duran njoftoi se presidenti Erdoğan pritet të zhvillojë takime dypalëshe me të gjithë liderët pjesëmarrës.
Samiti më i madh në historinë e NATO-s
Sipas organizatorëve, samiti i Ankarasë pritet të jetë më i madhi në historinë e NATO-s për nga numri i liderëve pjesëmarrës dhe përfaqësuesve të mediave ndërkombëtare.
Rreth 3.000 gazetarë, ekipe televizive, fotoreporterë dhe përfaqësues të mediave dixhitale nga e gjithë bota janë akredituar për të mbuluar aktivitetin. Për ta janë rezervuar shtatë hotele në Ankara, ndërsa transporti do të realizohet me 45 autobusë.
Qendra Ndërkombëtare e Medias është pajisur me rreth 1.800 vende pune, afro 100 pozicione për transmetime direkte, studio televizive, ambiente për intervista, dhoma montazhi, sisteme IPTV dhe infrastrukturë të avancuar teknike, duke u cilësuar si objekti më i madh i këtij lloji i ngritur ndonjëherë për një samit të NATO-s.
Drejtoria e Komunikimit e Presidencës turke do të angazhojë 850 punonjës gjatë samitit, ndërsa transmetimet ndërkombëtare do të koordinohen nga transmetuesi publik TRT me 96 kamera, 18 automjete transmetimi dhe 26 pika të ndryshme transmetimi.
Për sigurinë janë angazhuar gjithsej 56.288 efektivë, përfshirë policinë dhe xhandarmërinë, si edhe 639 specialistë të sigurisë kibernetike që do të monitorojnë vazhdimisht kërcënimet në hapësirën digjitale. Delegacionet do të përdorin tre aeroporte të ndryshme: Esenboğa, Aeroportin e Ankarasë dhe bazën ajrore Mürted për avionët e transportit.
Vlerësimet e aleatëve
Kryeministrja e Lituanisë, Inga Ruginiene, e cilësoi Turqinë një aleat të rëndësishëm të NATO-s falë kapaciteteve të saj ushtarake dhe pozicionit strategjik. Në një intervistë për Anadolu Agency, ajo tha se samiti duhet të sjellë hapa konkretë drejt objektivit për rritjen e shpenzimeve të mbrojtjes në 5 për qind të Prodhimit të Brendshëm Bruto.
Ruginiene stressed that Russia remains the main long-term threat to Euro-Atlantic security and that military support for Ukraine must continue. She added that strengthening the defense industry and increasing production capacities are essential for a stronger NATO. According to her, a more militarily capable Europe will also strengthen the transatlantic bond.
The Dutch Defense Chief, Onno Eichelsheim, also stated that Turkey's role within NATO will increase in the coming years, while the United States reduces some of its military capabilities in the Alliance.
He praised the Turkish defense industry and said that there is great potential for cooperation. According to him, Turkey, with the second largest army in NATO and its strategic position on the southeastern flank of the Alliance, will be one of the main pillars of collective defense in the future.
During the summit, the "Allies in Ankara" platform will also be organized, an initiative of the Turkish SETA foundation in cooperation with the Munich Security Conference.
The forum will bring together ministers, senior officials and security experts from NATO member countries and other international partners.
