US President Donald Trump has sparked controversy with his statements about Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, claiming that she asked him to take a photo with her during the G7 summit.
"Meloni asked me to take a picture with her. I felt sorry for her and accepted the picture," Trump said, adding that she "is probably glad I spoke to her at the G7, because I wasn't forced to speak to her."
The American president's statements have caused a reaction from the Italian Prime Minister, who expressed surprise and described Trump's words as untrue.
"Donald Trump's statements are completely fabricated. I am honestly shocked. I am surprised. I do not know why the American president behaves in this way towards his allies. It is not the first time this has happened. I can only say that it is a pity that he does not show the same determination towards the enemies of the West and the leaders with whom he seems much closer. One thing you must remember: Italy and I never pray," said Meloni.
