United States President Donald Trump honored three military veterans at the White House with the Medal of Honor, the highest decoration awarded for military service in the United States.
During the ceremony, Trump faced an unexpected situation while trying to place the medal on Army Major Nicholas Dockery. Footage released shows the president struggling for several seconds to secure the decoration, ultimately opting to secure it with a knot in the ribbon.
It was different during the decoration of Navy Major James Capers Jr., where the ceremony proceeded without any obstacles.
The Medal of Honor was awarded to three veterans for extraordinary actions on the battlefield. In addition to Dockery and Capers Jr., the award was also given posthumously to Marine Colonel John Ripley, who died in 2008.
"These are extraordinary men. We thank you for your service and sacrifice. We will never forget you," Trump said during the ceremony.
James Capers Jr., now 88, was honored for his heroism in Vietnam in 1967. Although seriously wounded by a landmine explosion, he took command of his unit, requested air support and organized the evacuation of wounded soldiers before leaving the combat zone himself.
Meanwhile, Nicholas Dockery was decorated for his actions in Afghanistan in 2012, when his unit was ambushed by the Taliban. According to the official account, he rescued wounded soldiers under enemy fire and refused to leave his position until all the wounded were transported to safety.
Posthumously, the Medal of Honor was also awarded to Colonel John Ripley for an operation carried out in Vietnam in 1972. He placed about 500 kilograms of explosives to destroy a strategic bridge, an action that hindered the advance of North Vietnamese forces.
The ceremony focused on the contribution and sacrifice of veterans, however, Trump's moment during the medal presentation became one of the most commented episodes in the media and on social networks.
