Former President Ilir Meta has reacted from detention regarding the SPAK investigation into the CEZ-DIA file. Through a Facebook post, he emphasizes that the defense will bring about 100 more witnesses, in addition to those SPAK has called so far.
According to Meta, among the witnesses the defense intends to present are around 40 foreign nationals, mainly American citizens, diplomats and officials.
"We welcome the approximately 100 witnesses called by the Special Prosecution Office and especially the three super-whistleblowers. We will also seek approximately 100 other witnesses, of whom approximately 40 are foreign nationals, mainly American citizens, diplomats and officials, including all representatives of lobbying companies that have contracts with the SMI. A special invitation will be extended to all shareholders and directors of the Washington DIA, as well as to the executives of the McKeon Group, including the Greek-American lawyer Fidetzis.
"Due to the inability of Charles McGonigal to appear in person in court, who is serving a prison sentence in the US for Edi Rama and is suffering for the catastrophic damage he caused to Albanian-American relations, we will also address a series of questions to him through the court through registered letters," Meta writes.
The former head of state is accused of three criminal offenses related to the CEZ/DIA file and lobbying in the US. The charges were communicated to him on August 4, 2025. Earlier, he asked SPAK to make public the LSI lobbying contract in the US, arguing that the lack of access to documentation is violating his right to defense.
Meta has been in custody since October 2024, while his ex-wife, Monika Kryemadhi, is being investigated under the security measure "obligation to appear".
