A massive fire almost completely destroyed a luxury resort in the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean, Central America on Friday, forcing the evacuation of about 1,700 tourists, authorities said.
Local media reported that a 46-year-old Italian tourist lost her life in the fire, while several other tourists needed medical attention.
Viva Dominicus Beach Resort by Wyndham is located in Bayahibe, one of the most popular tourist destinations on the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic.
According to authorities, about 1,690 tourists were evacuated and transferred to other hotels or accommodation facilities near the area due to the flames engulfing the resort.
The Emergency Operations Center said the flames spread rapidly due to strong winds and flammable materials used on part of the complex's roof.
Authorities also clarified that the neighboring resort, Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace, suffered no damage and continued normal operations.
