FIFA has made a significant, but little-noticed, change to the way the 2026 World Cup group rankings are determined. The change could have major consequences for the race for qualification and the way the final group stage matches are played.
For the first time in the tournament's history, FIFA is using head-to-head results as the main criterion for dividing teams that finish with equal points, leaving the overall goal difference in the group in second place.
The impact of this rule has been felt immediately. Haiti and Turkey have already been eliminated from the tournament due to the new system. Both teams are only three points behind the third-placed teams in their respective groups, but they are no longer able to catch up, having been defeated in their head-to-head matches by those teams.
In practice, even if Haiti or Turkey managed to equal the number of points with their rivals, they would fall behind in the standings due to the result of the direct match.
Until 1966, FIFA used goal difference to divide teams with equal points. This system calculated the ratio between goals scored and goals conceded. In 1970, the organization switched to goal difference, a method that remained in effect for more than five decades.
FIFA has now adopted a system similar to that of UEFA, which has long given priority to the results of direct matches between teams.
Supporters of this change argue that it provides a fairer assessment of the relative strength of teams, as it focuses on the match-ups between them and avoids the influence of deep results against weaker opponents. One such example is Germany's 7-1 win over Curaçao, a result that would have carried significant weight in the rankings under the old system.
On the other hand, critics believe that the overall goal difference remains the best indicator of a team's performance throughout the group stage, as it takes into account results against all opponents.
FIFA first tested the system at last year's Club World Cup, where Flamengo finished first in Group D ahead of eventual winners Chelsea.
Why Mexico has already secured first place in the group
One of the main consequences of the new rule is that teams have a better chance of securing not only qualification, but also first place in the group before the third match.

Për të garantuar kreun e grupit pas raundit të dytë duhet të plotësohen disa kushte:
Skuadra kryesuese duhet të fitojë të dyja ndeshjet e para;
Dy ndeshjet e tjera në grup duhet të përfundojnë në barazim; ose
Kryesuesja duhet të ketë fituar përballjen direkte ndaj ekipit apo ekipeve që ndodhen me tri pikë.
Grupi D
Shtetet e Bashkuara siguruan vendin e parë pasi Turqia nuk fitoi ndaj Paraguait.
Grupi E
Gjermania fiton grupin me një fitore ndaj Bregut të Fildishtë, nëse Ekuadori nuk fiton kundër Curaçaos.
Bregu i Fildishtë siguron vendin e parë me fitore, nëse Curaçao nuk mposht Ekuadorin.
Grupi F
Suedia do të kualifikohet si fituese e grupit nëse mposht Holandën dhe Japonia nuk fiton ndaj Tunizisë.
Grupi G
Asnjë skuadër nuk mund të sigurojë vendin e parë pas raundit të dytë.
Grupi H
Asnjë skuadër nuk mund të sigurojë vendin e parë pas raundit të dytë.
Grupi I

England wins the group with a win over Ghana, unless Panama beats Croatia.
Ghana secures first place with a win, unless Croatia wins against Panama.
Full ranking criteria
When two or more teams finish with the same number of points, FIFA uses the following criteria in order:
Points earned in head-to-head matches between the teams in question. If three teams are involved, a mini-ranking is created with only the matches between them.
Goal difference in direct confrontations.
Number of goals scored in head-to-head matches.
Overall goal difference in the group.
Number of goals scored in the group.
Fair Play (yellow card -1 point, red card after two yellows -3, direct red card -4, yellow card followed by direct red card -5).
Current FIFA rankings.
Best position in previous FIFA rankings.
