Former United States President Barack Obama has delivered a message on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of US Independence, emphasizing the importance of defending democracy and the values on which the country was founded.
In his message, Obama recalled that the proclamation of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 represented a revolutionary step, affirming the principle that all men are created equal and enjoy inalienable rights.
The former president acknowledged that the founding fathers of the United States did not fully realize this ideal, as slavery continued to exist and the right to vote was limited to white male property owners. However, he stressed that the Constitution and the Bill of Rights created the basis for subsequent generations to expand freedoms and rights to more and more citizens.
According to Obama, for more than two centuries, Americans have contributed to strengthening democracy through protests, petitions, strikes and civic engagement, giving a more comprehensive meaning to the phrase "We the People."
At the end of his message, Obama emphasized that the challenges to democracy remain current and urged citizens not to fall into complacency.
"We cannot become complacent now. We still have much work to do to protect our democracy and build a more just and equal future for all," said the former US president
