Thousands of people protested in the German city of Erfurt on Saturday against the holding of a congress of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. According to German media, the demonstrations accompanied the party's political activity and caused significant disruption to traffic.
Police said around 20,000 protesters took part in several rallies and marches in central Erfurt. Some of the marches gathered thousands of participants and headed towards the city center and the complex where the AfD congress was being held.
Authorities also reported several roadblocks organized by protesters. In the early hours of the morning, a section of the highway near Erfurt was completely closed to traffic after thousands of demonstrators blocked the crossing.
In addition to the highway, protesters also blocked several of the city's entrance roads, while public transportation was partially disrupted due to the situation.
The AfD, known for its anti-immigration stance, is the largest opposition force in Germany. For several years, the party has been monitored by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the domestic intelligence service, on suspicion of activities that could conflict with the country's constitutional order.
The protests in Erfurt take place at a time when the AfD continues to maintain high support in polls, while its presence on the German political scene remains the subject of strong debate and opposition from traditional parties and civil society organizations.
