Tens of thousands of Iranian citizens gathered today at the Grand Mosalla religious complex in Tehran to bid farewell to Iran's former Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, who led the Islamic Republic for more than three decades.
Those present, dressed in black and holding Iranian flags, held posters with portraits of Khamenei and his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, who is mentioned as a possible successor at the head of the country.
During the ceremony, Khamenei's coffin was first placed in a closed tribute for Iranian officials and foreign delegations, and then moved to a platform open to the public. At that moment, the crowd erupted in chants of: 'Death to the USA.'
According to Iranian state media, the same airstrike that killed Khamenei also killed several members of his family, whose coffins were displayed next to his during the funeral ceremony.
Meanwhile, Mojtaba Khamenei's long absence from public view has drawn media attention. Although Iranian authorities have stated that his health is good, speculation continues in media circles about his fate and role in the future direction of the Islamic Republic.
