A president tired of the war he started himself

A president tired of the war he started himself
Donald Trump

The US president is trying to declare victory and end the conflict, while Iran is using the stalemate to strengthen its position and challenge Washington.

Donald Trump seems to have finally realized that wars are easier to start than to end. After weeks of triumphant rhetoric and repeated deadlines for a ceasefire, the US president is now faced with a reality that does not match his political instincts: Iran is not giving up and is not agreeing to negotiate on Washington's terms.

From the beginning of the conflict, Trump treated the clash with Iran as a quick-fire operation, similar to other foreign policy adventures that he has presented as a demonstration of American supremacy. He believed that military pressure would force Tehran to capitulate within days. The US-Israeli attacks severely damaged Iranian military structures and eliminated key figures in the regime, but the strategic outcome was not what the White House had hoped for.

Iran did not break. Instead, it reacted by striking at interests in the Persian Gulf and taking practical control of the Strait of Hormuz, the artery through which much of the world's oil passes. The consequences were immediately felt in global markets: energy prices rose, Western economies began to feel the pressure, and the conflict entered a dangerous stalemate.

This is precisely where Trump is losing ground. The US president is politically sensitive to fuel prices and economic fluctuations, especially in the run-up to the midterm elections. Republicans are watching with concern the decline in electoral support and the rise of voter dissatisfaction. A long war in the Middle East is everything Trump had promised to avoid.

In public, he continues to downplay the conflict, calling it “a minor diversion” or “mini-war.” But behind closed doors, the US administration is facing real constraints. The naval blockade of Iran is damaging the Iranian economy, but not as quickly as Washington had calculated. American assessments suggest that Tehran can hold out for several more months. In this game of patience, the question is no longer who has the military advantage, but who can bear the economic and political cost the longest.

And patience has never been Trump's strong point.

The US president seems weary of the conflict. He wants to focus on the economic agenda and the important summit with China, where he aims to negotiate new trade deals with Xi Jinping. For this reason, the White House is avoiding any major military escalation that could further destabilize the region.

However, the main problem remains the lack of a negotiating partner. The US administration is no longer sure who makes the real decisions in Tehran. The more radical structures of the Revolutionary Guard seem to have marginalized the more pragmatic elements of the regime. Rounds of negotiations have failed one after another, and Iran has refused to give any signs of compromise.

This puts Trump in an unusual position: he wants to declare an end to the war, but he doesn't have an agreement to politically justify that end.

In practice, many of the objectives that the US administration had announced remain unfulfilled. The Iranian missile program has not been completely destroyed. Tehran's allied groups in the region continue to be active. There is no regime change and no new nuclear deal. Moreover, Iran emerges from this conflict with an important strategic lesson: it has proven that it can strike the global economy through Hormuz and force Washington to calculate the political costs of any military decision.

In the end, the irony of the situation is clear. Trump, who built his political image on the idea of "perfect agreements," is facing an opponent who seems uninterested in giving him either a deal or an easy way out of the conflict. And the longer this state of suspense lasts, the more the war risks turning from a show of force into a political burden for the American president. /Pamphlet
