The boxer who surrendered to the monk

He called the Pontiff "weak", attributed his election to himself, threatened to withdraw troops, but now sends his secretary of state to request a meeting with Meloni and an audience with the Pope. The boxer lost the first round...

Signals matter in diplomacy. And Marco Rubio's visit to Rome is a clear signal, despite his official "melting ice" rhetoric: the one seeking a meeting is not the Pope, but Donald Trump.

After publicly calling Pope Leo XIV “weak” and “terrible,” after taking credit for his election to the Holy See, the American president is now in the position of one who sends an emissary to repair what he himself destroyed. And this is not a “meltdown.” This is a tactical retreat after a failed attack.

Because the Pope did not fall into the trap of Trump's harsh war. His response was short, clear, and brutally elegant: "I am not a politician, I will continue to speak out against war."

In these few words, the Pontiff did not bow to provocation, he did not echo the insults. Instead, he did what every truly moral figure does: he changed the terrain.

Trump talks about power, voters, and "enemies." The Pope talks about peace, dignity, and his spiritual mission. It's like comparing a boxer to a monk: they fight in completely different arenas.

And herein lies the great lesson the Pope has given Donald Trump, without debate:

True strength lies not in threats, but in moral standing.

Trump is used to threats. He threatened to withdraw troops from Italy, attacked Giorgia Meloni, mocked the Pope. And what happened? Nothing! Italy did not budge. The Vatican did not respond in kind. And now, here he is: Rubio in Rome, asking to "meet Meloni," and hoping for an audience with the Pope.

This is the great irony. Trump tried to use the brute force of a superpower. The Pope used the authority of truth. And he won.

Prime Minister Meloni also emerged stronger from this confrontation. By defending the Pope and not backing down to Trump’s pressure, she showed a diplomatic backbone that many other leaders have long since lost. She understood something fundamental: when you face a bully, backing down only fuels the bullying.

Of course, Rubio will try to "build the bridge." This is about realpolitik, about US military bases in Italy, about billions of dollars at stake. And it is right that diplomats do their job.

But let's not confuse things. Who is apologizing? Who is asking for a meeting? Whose emissary is walking the corridors of Rome to appease partners? Donald Trump!

Pope Leo XIV taught the American president a historic lesson. He taught him that ego and threats are not invincible. In front of them stands a greater force: the calmness of those who have nothing to ask for and everything to prove.

Now Rubio's tap in Rome is not a "kneeling" of the Pope. It's the opposite. It's the White House's cautious, almost embarrassed, return to pick up the pieces of a relationship that Trump himself blew up.

What about the Pope? He will continue to talk about peace. Because he knows: in this duel, he did not need to win. He preserved the dignity of the Holy See. While Trump… lost both. /Pamphlet
