The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, has accused Prime Minister Rama of publicly admitting the use of monitoring technologies to track citizens' online activity.
In a video he published, Berisha dwells on a statement by Rama regarding the capacities of state institutions to monitor internet traffic and identify suspicious activities on the network.
According to the opposition leader, the prime minister's statements raise suspicions that the government is using DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) technology, which enables the analysis of internet traffic. Berisha claims that this technology is being used to monitor citizens and protest participants.
"Scandal! He admits with his black mouth that he is using DPI to eavesdrop on citizens and protesters. I condemn this anti-constitutional crime with the greatest force. Madness!", Berisha writes in his reaction.
His accusations come after Rama stated that Albania has built advanced defense systems against cyberattacks and that authorities are able to monitor network activity. The prime minister also mentioned that during a certain event, the number of users connected to Albania was several times higher than usual.
