The 'lone wolf' and the concern of Friedrich Merz

The German Chancellor warns that Trump's unilateral course towards Iran is leaving the US without an exit strategy and testing the unity of the West...

The clash between Donald Trump and Friedrich Merz is not just a routine political debate between two leaders, but a clear symptom of a deeper strategic rift within the Western camp. At the heart of this clash lies a question that Europe has long articulated with diplomatic caution, but which Berlin is now expressing openly: does Washington have a real strategy for exiting the conflict with Iran, or is it operating on tactical impulses without a sustainable vision?

The German chancellor's stance is not rhetoric for domestic consumption. It represents an accumulated concern in European capitals, where the perception is that the Donald Trump administration is handling a complex geopolitical crisis with limited instruments and without sufficient coordination with allies. When Merz speaks of "humiliation" at the negotiating table, he is actually referring to an unpleasant reality: a power like the United States, engaged in an open conflict but without an articulated way out, gradually loses its political and diplomatic advantage.

In this context, the German criticism is not anti-American; on the contrary, it is an attempt to restore strategic rationality at a time when impulsive decisions can have irreversible consequences. Europe, directly exposed to the economic and security consequences of the escalation in the Middle East, cannot afford the luxury of a long war without clear objectives. And here lies the crux of the debate: the lack of an “exit strategy” is not just a technical gap, but a real risk to global stability.

While Donald Trump relies on rhetoric of force and maximum pressure on Iran, Friedrich Merz represents a colder and more calculated approach, where diplomacy and multilateral coordination remain the main instruments to avoid an uncontrollable conflict. This difference is not just stylistic; it is a philosophical divide over how the international order should be managed.

History has shown that wars without a clear end become a burden for their initiators. In this light, Berlin's warning should be read as an act of responsibility, not as a challenge. Because ultimately, what is at stake is not the prestige of a leader or an administration, but the credibility of the entire West as a unified and rational actor on the global stage./ Pamphlet
