This is the whole scene, not of comedy like Orwell's, but the drama of our Justice.
The Albanian Helsinki Committee, the day before yesterday, distributed an alarming statement to the media about the 'Animal Farm' in court. It was triggered by the protest of the defense lawyer of Mr. Ilir Beqja, former minister, accused by SPAK and GJKKO for legal matters. Their business. The lawyer complains that his client, Beqja, is caught as soon as he enters the courtroom, a cage is brought and he is thrown inside. At first it was a metal cage, while now it has been replaced with a glass cage.
The lawyer complains as much about his own plight as about the suffering of his client. His plight is how to communicate with the client. He has to get into the cage, then out; then in, then out. In this way, the lawyer also becomes a 'criminal', that is, a defendant, condemned to the cage.

The lawyer's appeal was dismissed on April 7, 2026. The court justified the decision by stating that 'the cage is not mine, I did not put it there'.

The Albanian Helsinki Committee is trying to raise its voice and say that this practice of the Court 'constitutes a serious violation of domestic legislation and the standards of the European Court of Human Rights'.

But 'Helsinki' doesn't tire and continues:
“First, according to Article 341 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the conduct of the court session and the maintenance of order in the courtroom are the exclusive competence of the court.
Secondly, Article 344 clearly provides that the defendant participates in the trial as a free person, even when he is detained. Restrictions are allowed only if he impedes the conduct of the hearing. In this context, the Court's argument that placing a person in a cage is the competence of the General Directorate of Prisons, conflicts with the criminal procedural law. Neither Law No. 81/2020 nor the relevant sub-legal acts provide for the use of a cage as a standard measure in the courtroom.
Third, this practice also contradicts the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights. The European Court of Human Rights has underlined that there is no justification for treating a person like a “wild animal”.
