Ferit Hoxha, the minister-hostage of old bargains: from career diplomacy to the "idiots" scandal...
The alleged message to the Albanians of North Macedonia opens a larger debate: is Albanian diplomacy a service to the state, or an archive of power bargaining?
Ferit Hoxha is not a random name in Albanian diplomacy. He comes from a long career in the foreign service, with positions in the UN, the EU and most recently at the head of the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, where he was appointed on March 4, 2026.
But precisely this long career, presented as experience by official propaganda, has become for critics a symbol of a diplomacy that has survived every power by adapting to every political boss.
The latest scandal, where the opposition claims that Hoxha used offensive language towards North Macedonian Albanians in an internal communication, is not just a banal WhatsApp episode. The DP has published the alleged message, while the Foreign Ministry has denied it, calling it untrue and fabricated.
If the message is fabricated, the authors must be held accountable. But if it is authentic, then we don't just have a minister who speaks harshly; we have a crisis of state representation. Because the Foreign Minister is not a coffeehouse commentator, nor a diplomatic gambler. He is the institutional face of the Republic of Albania.
The problem with Ferit Hoxha is deeper than a phrase. He represents the kind of official who never falls, because he belongs to no principle, but to every power. Useful to Berisha, acceptable to Rama, recycled at every international station, Hoxha has become the model of diplomats who are not measured by results, but by the ability to survive.
From sensitive files on relations with Greece, to Russian shadows, to regional bargaining, and to the latest debates on integration, his name appears as a figure of dark continuity: not always at the center of scandal, but always near the tables where interests greater than the public are at stake.
Edi Rama has brought Ferit Hoxha onto the scene not as a new minister, but as an old guarantee. A man who speaks to the Greeks, Russians, Europeans and Balkans with the language of silent compromise. A diplomat who, more than a vision for Albania, seems to carry the map of power bargaining in his pocket.
Therefore, the issue today is not just whether Ferit Hoxha said or did not say “idiot.” The issue is whether Albania can continue to be represented by people who have seen every government, served every boss, and emerged unscathed from every dark chapter of Albanian diplomacy.
In the end, Hoxha is not a minister. He is a political pawn: usable, recyclable and dangerous precisely because he knows too much./ Pamphlet
